Limited Edition Vintage Floral Decal Mug - Speckled White
Limited Edition Vintage Floral Decal Mug - Speckled White
Last year I bought a selection of secondhand 'overglaze decals' from a studio clear out sale. Overglaze decals are full colour designs which are applied to a piece after the glaze firing and fired for a third time. They are often used on commercial wares. These designs are all from the 1960s and 1970s, and evoke a cosy, familiar feeling as I am quite sure most of us have seen them on china at Nan's or older generations homes in the past!
These mugs are thrown on the potters wheel from speckled stoneware clay and finished with matt white glaze. Finally, I applied the overglaze decals and fired for a third time. You can see a video of the decorating process here.
I love the way the decals have fired onto the matt glaze. They appear a little 'pre-worn' or aged in parts and the speckles from the clay burst through at random. Use the zoom tool to take a closer look at the photos to see what I mean.
Every item is entirely handmade by Emma and there will be some variations in size, shape and finish. Photos are illustrative of the handmade item you will receive. Items sold individually.
All designs are 10cm tall with 400ml-ish capacity (measurements are approximate). Gentle hand-washing recommended. Click here for more information on care of your item.
Please bear in mind that I don't know how old the physical decals are or how they have been stored. The designs are from the 60s and 70s. I have experimented to find the right firing temperature for them. They appear to be properly affixed, but I can't guarantee if they will fade or wear in time.
